Steve Tierney is an Australian mixed media artist and designer renowned for his striking collages, assembled using images cut from vintage magazines and photo journals. His work also incorporates original photographs, often sourced through collaborations with photographers.
Born in 1976 and raised in the southern coastal suburbs of Sydney, Tierney pursued art and design studies at Sydney Graphics College in 1997. Since 2003, he has showcased his art in both solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including in Mexico, the USA, Japan, and Italy.
After several years in Mexico, he recently returned to live in Australia with his family. As a valued member of the Sydney Collage Society, Tierney actively participates in group exhibitions, collaborative projects, and workshops.
The following images are a selection of new artworks, created over the past six months since joining Paint Studios in Marrickville. These pieces showcase his ongoing exploration and evolution in large-scale collages, a medium he has delved into extensively in recent exhibitions and installations.
Drawing inspiration from photojournalism of the 1950s and 60s, the giant collages below have a cinematic quality. Offering a glaring commentary on our everyday life by blending bold and powerful imagery with strong black and white contrasts, they reflect the era's stark social dynamics and highlight their relevance to contemporary issues. The hand cut and reassembled prints juxtapose historical and modern themes, using the starkness of black and white to expose underlying societal tensions and provoke thought about past and present values. Viewers are invited to interpret the artwork through their own lens, making their own conclusions about the narratives within.
Tierney will continue to explore these materials, techniques and themes further, with the intention of exhibiting a new body of work in 2025.
The following smaller collages were created for a group show in Sydney in July 2024. Integrating similar themes and techniques as the large scale pieces above, the artist has created a series of colourful artworks featuring bill posters collected on the streets of Sydney, which replace traditional mounting board behind the collaged images. Allowing the final works to extend beyond their intended physical boundary.
The final video piece below, titled Everything Ends. Nothing Ends, is an interactive work that was displayed within the gallery where visitors were allowed to literally rip layers from a built up assemblage of found posters. The result was both fun and thought-provoking, engaging participants in a dynamic experience that challenged their perspectives and invited them to explore new ideas through active involvement.
